Eleven months. In just a few weeks I will be the mother of a ONE year old. I still remember very vividly the early morning that I went into labor. For the first several days after I came home from the hospital, I wanted nothing but to go back to that morning and do it all over, the right way...and here we are a year later. Me - 30, Jake - almost 1. I am looking forward to giving him whole milk and other dairy products and eggs. We have been very careful in feeding him up until this point. Maybe that's a first child thing, but whatever. He has learned to use a straw and so we have ditched the sippy cup for now. When he starts drinking cow's milk in a few weeks we'll be ditching the bottle too.
These days it is very easy to put him to bed. He used to cry when we put him down in his crib for naps or bedtime but now he does not cry at all, especially at night. We usually hold him in the rocking chair for a few minutes, then put him in his crib and walk away. I think his object permanence is starting to develop. Another new thing that he loves to do is swaying, mostly to music but sometimes not. The other night as I was getting him ready for bed, I set him down in the crib for a second and I saw him cruise to one side of the crib and started swaying while holding on to the rail. I realized that he was watching himself dance in the closet mirror. He sure is a character, just like his daddy!
At 11 months, Jake has cut his molars. About a month ago he was running a low fever and had a runny nose for a week and just as we suspected, he was teething. He would wake up at night and whimper but was able to go back to sleep without us having to comfort him. It got better a few days later and sure enough I felt them protruding through his gums.
I feel like he is growing up so fast. He is not walking on his own yet but we know that he will when he is ready, just like with everything else.

8, 9, 10
Finally, some time to blog! Jake is now 10 months old. I wanted to blog about all of his milestones but, unfortunately, October was an extremely busy month, with internship applications on top of everything else that is making my life busy...so busy that I had to temporarily drop off the face of the (virtual) earth because every free minute that I had was devoted to internship applications, etc. etc. (P.S. I am so done with school.). I'll be honest, I have not had the time to keep up with everyone else's blogs either, so please don't get mad when I ask you something that you blogged about :)
Anyway, here we are...10 months into parenthood. Jake is doing great and thriving! At eight months he clapped, crawled, and stood supported. I think he actually crawled on all fours a few days after my last blog post. At nine months he learned to wave hello and goodbye. At ten months, he is cruising along on furniture and the giant glass window in our living room. He is learning to protest and get his feelings hurt when I sternly say "no." But gosh he is SO CUTE! I wish pictures and videos could show just how delicious and delightful he is, but they really don't do him any justice. So I am glad that I get to be his mom and capture his cuteness and rapid growth with my own eyes every day. Everyone told me that months 6 to 9 are the best, but I am really, really enjoying my ten-month-old!
I am also getting closer to my 30th birthday so I have been reflecting on that a lot. I feel so blessed to have accomplished so much before I turned 30...but I will save that for another blog post.

Grow, Jake, Grow!
Jake is 8 months old today. His seventh month was just full of growth and it seems like in the blink of an eye he went from a passive infant to an interactive baby who responds to his environment. He reaches for things and is curious about everything. He scoots around and is almost crawling on all fours. When our laptops or cell phones are in front of him on the carpet he will scoot forward and do the worm crawl to get it. He is able to sit up from lying on his belly. There have been a couple of mornings when Chris went in to get him and he was just sitting in his crib with a big smile on his face. When I bathe him I really have to watch him carefully because he grabs on to the edge of his baby tub and stands. We have already lowered his crib so as to avoid him standing and falling out!
His personality has really developed and he now shows a wide range of emotions, from excited to frustrated. He babbles and makes all sorts of noises. When he sees the dog he shows excitement and says something like, "gggg gggg....dggg dggg dggg." He loves our dog Laila and watches her every move. In the mornings when we get him from his room he is usually on his tummy, and as soon as we enter the room he'll flap his arms and legs, bury his smiling face in his crib, shakes his head, and look up at us, barely able to contain his excitement. He says "dadadada" though not discriminately yet (I don't think babies can do that until 8 months or so, can they?) He makes "gagaga" noises, clicks his tongue, and blows raspberries. He gives high fives. Oh and he has seven teeth.
As far as eating and sleeping go we really cannot complain. He sleeps about 10 hours straight and rarely wakes up in the middle of the night, and when he does he usually goes back to sleep easily. I still make his food, which I really enjoy. I had to stop posting all the food I have made for him on this blog because a) it's not a baby food blog, and b) it became too much! He has moved on to "stage 2" foods, which are coarsely pureed and include fruit and veggie combinations. He can now eat poultry, which I plan to introduce in the next week. The kid can chow down 5 to 7 oz of food easily and make 6 oz of formula disappear in less than 5 minutes. He eats three 4.5 oz meals and gets about 24 oz of formula a day. I don't know where it all goes because I think he is still pretty small for his age. But he is happy, healthy, and sleeps well so we must be doing something right.
I can't believe how fast time has gone by! Gone are the days of breastfeeding and waking at all hours of the night (thank God). I remember how hard those days were...but I actually kind of miss them. My baby boy is growing up way too fast and I want to cherish each day because when we put him down at night that's already a day of our lives gone forever.

Jake's Vacation #2: Palm Desert!
Every summer I go to Palm Desert with my husband and his family. This year was special because not only was it Jake's first time there but the whole family (except for my brother-in-law Sean) was there. It was quite a reunion for the Harrison family as Chris' half-brother, Rob, and his family came to make up for lost time...
Chris, Jake and I shared a villa with my sister-in-law Wendy, her husband Paul, and their 2 girls. It was a blast, but I will say that vacationing with a baby is quite an experience! Our car was packed with mostly Jake's necessities. We wanted to keep his routine as normal as possible, meaning eat and nap around the same time, bath before bed, etc. Jake took some time to adjust to being away from home but still managed to sleep pretty well at night except for the first night. We took him swimming and down the water slide for the first time! I think he liked the water...he even took a NAP in the pool (in a floatie) the first day!
To sum up the Harrisons' annual summer trip, each of us took turns hosting dinner each night, the adults played board games after the babies went to bed, and we went to the pool every day. Jake got to meet some of his relatives for the first time. We made a lot of good memories and are looking forward to next year's trip already.

San Diego Classic/Jake's first weekend getaway!
What a fun weekend Jakey and I had! On Thursday we drove down to San Diego to be with Chris for the annual San Diego Classic (girls basketball) Tournament. I will admit I was a little nervous about taking Jake on his first trip but he did so well! On the drive down, he didn't make a peep from La Verne to our hotel in San Diego!
We had dinner with Julie on Thursday night; did some shopping, watched the girls' game, and had dinner with Brent, Kerri, and baby Eliana Gastineau on Friday; and on Saturday we went to Sea World with Ngoc, Kent and the kids during the day and to the team Family Night at the beach.
Jake did well as we went out and about and slept well even though he was a little off schedule. I am so proud of him! I really hope that Jake being such a good baby does not mean that our next baby will be a terror. But, we won't worry about that now as that won't be for a couple more years. I'm just enjoying my baby Jake right now...he is my little best friend.

Jake is 6 Months Old!
I can't believe my baby is 6 months old already. It seems like just yesterday we were anxiously waiting to take him home from the NICU. Boy, has he grown fast! Yesterday he was an infant who did nothing but nurse. Now he is turning over, eating solids, holding his own bottle/sippy cup, sleeping well, and babbling. He smiles a lot and is very aware of his environment. He is observant and likes to watch the cars go by in front of our house.
Jake has grown so much and so have Chris and I as parents. When Jake was about 2 1/2 months old I started to actually have fun with him and truly enjoy motherhood. Everyone told me that it only gets better. Well, they were right! Being a mommy is so much better than I ever imagined. The amount of joy that he has brought into our lives is immeasurable. We love him so much and feel very blessed to have such a great baby boy!

Making Baby Food - Bananas and Pears
Bananas:
This one is very simple. Take a very ripe banana (preferably speckled), peel, and mash with a fork in a bowl. Serve. That's it!
Pears:
Pears tend to be thin and runny. Cereal can be added when serving. Pears can be steamed gently before pureeing if served to babies under 6 months.

Catching Up Part 2
Mothers Day 2011 - Jake's first time at church. Picture taken in the Baby Room at Paz Naz.
18 weeks old - Sunday school group picnic at the park, honoring Jake's birth.
5 months old - sippy cup champ!
4 months - first time eating solid foods (rice cereal)
Also in the 5th month, Chris celebrated his first ever Fathers Day in the hospital due to appendicitis. I created a video for him which I will try to post here...
And that's it. I think we are all caught up now. Jake is 5 and a half months old already. I wish I could slow down time!

Catching Up (Months 4 and 5)
Today is Fathers Day. My poor husband is spending his first Fathers Day in the hospital getting his appendix out. So what better time to blog, while I am in the waiting room. And since I am kind of rush blogging right now I am going to have to go back to this post to add pictures later when I am home. So be sure to come back! I have been wanting to blog since May but I have been extremely busy, and that is an understatement. It's more like too-much-to-do-not-enough-time busy so better-not-waste-any-minute-of-the-day busy. I realized that I am not just any new mom, I am a new mom who is in graduate school, which puts me in a whole 'nother category of moms. I have to juggle classes, homework, practicum, my son, my marriage, my health, my family, my friends. And so, I do what I need to do when I can. For survival. For sanity. To maintain my happiness. People tell me all the time, "I don't know how you do it?!" When you're as driven as me and in a situation like mine, you don't dilly-dally. You just do it and get it done. Work hard now, play later, although recently it's been Play with Jake now and work when he sleeps. I also believe that nothing is impossible as long as God and my support system have my back.
So, what have we been up to since my last blog...well, a lot. I celebrated my first Mothers Day on May 8th. I really wanted to blog about that right then and there because exactly one year ago on Mothers Day I took a pregnancy test that forever changed my life. And that change is now 5 months old, with 2 bottom teeth. Jake's 4th month was a time for catching up. Catching up on his weight because at his 4-month check up he was in the lower range of the percentile rank. He is now eating rice cereal and oatmeal and in a few weeks we will start him on vegetables/fruit. For me, I was catching up on my dissertation, which I am happy to report that I successfully turned in the first draft of my Chapter 1 last week.
Last month was also a time for acceptance- acceptance of the fact that I was not producing gallons of milk to keep my baby exclusively breastfed, acceptance that I am not like any other new mom, acceptance that my labor and delivery was unlike most deliveries...remembering that for the first 10 days of his life my baby was in the NICU and I was having to pump, after having to endure a traumatic delivery, so of course my milk supply was going to be affected. So now I am having to supplement and I have learned to accept that. All things considered, our baby is happy and healthy! And he brings such joy to our lives!
It is amazing how Jake went from being an infant to a responsive, growing baby. He is not even 6 months old and I'm already feeling sad about him growing up too fast. So I try to savor each day with my baby because I know that once that day passes it is forever gone except in my memory...

Easter 2011
On Easter morning, I was woken up by my precious boys to go on an Easter egg hunt. Chris (and Jake) placed jellybean-filled eggs all over the house that led up to a basket with some of my favorite candy. It was so special and made me feel very loved and blessed! Moments like that make me stop and appreciate what a sweet and wonderful husband I have, and now a sweet little baby boy that we have together. We are looking forward to Easter next year when Jake can actually go on an Easter egg hunt!
We spent the rest of the day spending time with both of our families. It was a great way to celebrate Jesus' resurrection! For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son...and God must really love me for giving me such a great husband and family.

3 Months Old
Exactly 3 months ago today, on January 7, I gave birth to the most beautiful and precious baby boy. Though his entrance into the world was rough, his journey since then has been relatively smooth. When he was taken away from me after birth to be stabilized at Queen of the Valley NICU, I was worried that we would not have a strong attachment to each other. But in the past couple of months our bond has surely strengthened. Even though he cannot talk (although he thinks he can by cooing all the time), my baby lets me know that he loves me every chance he gets. When he is being held by someone else and I walk by, he tracks my every move and smiles at me. One time he was crying as my mom was holding him and upon seeing my face he briefly smiled at me through his tears. He is such a sweet and happy boy. He has a cold right now and we think he is going through a growth spurt so he has been more fussy than usual but he still manages to smile and coo and be content.
I cannot begin to describe what a great baby he is, and I would go through what we went through at his birth all over again if it means having Jake in my life. He is growing up so fast and I kind of wish that he could stay small and be my sweet little baby forever.
Jake at 3 months:
At 3 months, Baby Jake is doing well. Still lots to learn for us as new parents but I can honestly say that it's now starting be more fun. Funny how I can't even remember details about those first few weeks, just that they were the toughest weeks of my life...and somehow I survived them...

Jake at 3 months:
- When he is not hungry or sleepy, Jake is very mellow and observant. He can sit in your lap and look around and observe what is going on for a long time. He loves looking in the mirror and smiling at the baby he sees :) He loves to chat and smile.
- We've noticed that the right side of his head has slightly flattened due to him preferring his right side and us not giving him enough tummy time until recently. We thought that all babies preferred one side over another but now we know to have him turn his head to his left and put him on his tummy or sit up a lot when awake. In just 1 week, we have seen improvement in his ability to turn his head to the left. We are continuing to correct this issue.
- Sleeps through the night most nights. We have delayed putting him in the crib because he has been congested for a week and needs for his head be elevated, so he currently still sleeps in his bassinet.
- He loves sucking on his thumb at naptime. His favorite sleeping position:

These Are the Moments...
Jake is 10 weeks old and for the last 2 nights he has slept all the way til 5:00 am, when I wake him up for his first feeding of the day! We knew he could do it eventually! It took lots of patience and consistency with our routine but it has definitely paid off...so far. I have become a believer of parents providing some order in their babies' lives instead of automatically responding to every cry with a bottle/breast. I have learned how to make assessments with each cry and that there are other sources of comfort for him besides my breasts(i.e., holding him, burping him, bathing him and changing his diaper comfort him when he is uncomfortable, gassy, and dirty)! Most importantly, I have learned to respect other parents' parenting and feeding preference with no judgment or criticism. I just know what has worked for us and am happy with that.
Jake has definitely made progress when it comes to sleeping. He sleeps in his room, though still in the sleeper and not his crib (that will be our goal at 3 months). We no longer rock him to sleep for what seemed like hours. When we put him down to sleep we do let him cry for a few minutes, console him, then walk out of the room. Sometimes he talks himself to sleep and it is the cutest thing you will ever hear. Think what you will, but letting your baby cry for a few minutes (at 2 months old, not any younger) as he goes to sleep doesn't make one a bad parent! Everything that I have read and older moms I have talked to will tell you that crying won't kill a baby, nor will it give him psychological issues later on in life :) Besides, he has learned to fall asleep on his own, which is a skill that he needs to learn anyway.
I am absolutely in love with my son. He is such a good, easygoing, happy baby. He cries only when he is hungry and fusses right before he falls asleep at naptime. He smiles, he "talks", he melts my heart. My favorite moment is just holding him and cuddling with him in the rocking chair after his first feeding at dawn. He is the happiest right after his feedings; he "chats" with me or Chris as we change his diaper-- also some of my favorite moments. These days Jake has also become my favorite shopping buddy. I put him in the Baby Bjorn and we walk up and down the aisles of Target. Most of the time he falls asleep in the baby carrier. He doesn't really cry in the car either. He just looks around and takes in everything that he sees. I think he enjoys being out. Last week, we attended Chris' basketball banquet at Glendora High and Jake did so well for his first big public event. He slept on my chest in the Bjorn while I ate dinner, then I fed him in Chris' car and enjoyed the rest of the banquet with Jake while Daddy did his coach thing.
I have to say that being on a schedule has made our lives easier. Having a set (but flexible) feeding schedule helps us plan our day. Jake eats about every 3 hours and in between feedings he has waketime and naptime. So when he eats at 5 pm, we know that we have until about 8 pm to do something like go on a walk with him or go shopping with him. And since he is content after he eats we can be confident that he will be happy while we are out and then head home in time for his next feeding.
I feel like we have come a long way since January. I am truly enjoying being a mommy. In fact, it is the best thing that has ever happened to me, next to marrying my best friend, of course. I am so thankful that I am at a phase in my life where I can be home with my baby most of time. These days, everything that I was used to doing before--school, practicum, life--seem doable again. And on top of that, I have so many moments in between that I treasure...precious moments spent with my baby boy.
"These are the moments I thank God that I'm alive/and these are the moments I'll remember all my life/I have all I've waited for/and I could not ask for more..."

And on top of that, I have so many moments in between that I treasure...precious moments spent with my baby boy.
"These are the moments I thank God that I'm alive/and these are the moments I'll remember all my life/I have all I've waited for/and I could not ask for more..."

Progress
Jacob is 8 weeks old! Hard to believe but he will be exactly 2 months old on Monday when he goes to the doctor's for his check-up. He is doing so well at home and last night he had the best sleep of his life! At 8 weeks I felt that it was time to start letting him sleep on his own, in his own room. We have had him on a flexible eat, wake, and nap cycle every 3 hours for about 3 weeks now. Normally we would rock him to sleep for his naps, which would take an hour sometimes and cuts into his sleep time before he wakes up to eat again. During the day I was lucky if he slept for an hour in between feedings. So yesterday I tried the tough love method. After I fed, burped, and changed him I held him for a little bit then put him down for a nap. I let him cry for a few minutes, then came in to soothe him, then walked away to let him sleep. It took a couple of tries at first but sure enough he fell asleep on his own. By bedtime he totally got it. He was fed at 8:00 and in bed by 9:00. He slept til 12:30 am, I fed him, and went back to sleep around 1:00 am...he did not wake up until 5:30 this morning! Hooray, more sleep for mommy and daddy!
Progress, progress, progress. A month ago I was frustrated, weary, and not fully enjoying being a new mommy. I was at my wits' end and did not know if I would make it to the next day. But now I am actually enjoying it and look forward to our feeding sessions when I get to bond with my baby boy. The best part of my day is when I have Jake on the changing table after he eats and we "talk." He smiles and coos and melts my heart in the process. I'm happy that it just gets better each week and everyone tells me it only gets better from here.
Lessons learned this month: trust yourself as a parent, know that you are doing the best job you can, and be patient- especially with a newborn. Trust that your child has the capability to be a good child, maybe the best in the world, even at 2 months old. Everything is trial-and-error in the beginning and things get easier the more you get to know each other.

Turning Point
At 5 weeks I noticed some significant changes in baby Jake and life at home. The first 4 weeks of Jacob's life were the hardest on me and Chris as new parents. We were sleep deprived, exhausted, drained, and inexperienced. I had a couple of meltdowns and times when I felt that I would not make it til the next day. But in week 5, Jake napped a little bit more to give me a break during the day and I started to actually enjoy him. To be quite honest, I was not really enjoying motherhood at first because it was the most difficult and trying thing I had yet to endure in my life (I think any mother who tells you otherwise is either a) lying right through their teeth or b) having someone else breastfeed and tend to their newborn all day!) So week 5 was the turning point in my relationship with my newborn baby. Don't get me wrong, it is still difficult and we are continuously learning new things about our baby each day. But the light at the end of the tunnel is now visible, if not a few feet away.
Jake is now 6 weeks old. He is a good and happy baby, smiling and cooing when he is full and content. We have developed a specific routine/schedule that works quite well and has saved our sanity. Also, Jake has been bottle-free for 3 days as of today! If there is one thing I have learned, determination is key to successful breastfeeding. Never underestimate your power as a woman and mother! As weary as I was, I feel like I did everything in my power to try to provide the best nourishment for my baby. I breastfed and pumped often to establish my milk supply and I am currently taking fenugreek pills (another thing I learned? Breastfeeding is not as easy as putting your baby on your boob.) Now I actually enjoy breastfeeding. The best advice I received was that you ultimately have to do what is best for you and your baby...whatever keeps YOU and your baby happy. A stressful environment won't help the situation.
As for me postpartum, I am healing pretty well, though still sore at times. The doctor said it takes about 6 months to be 90%. Having a baby is extremely traumatic for a woman's body but the outcome is well worth it.
So the storm known as Jake has passed in the Harrison household. It is still raining and we're learning to enjoy it, if not stay dry from it.

Healing
They say time heals all wounds. I have found this to be true. It has been 3 weeks since I went through that traumatic delivery and gave birth to a precious baby boy. The recovery from that experience is going pretty well. My battle scar from the C-section is healing nicely and I have recovered emotionally from that painful weekend.
The last three weeks have been a blur. I have never been more sleep deprived and happy at the same time. There have been moments when I felt like I would not make it til the next day. I thought my life was busy before but now it is REALLY busy! Everything revolves around the baby's schedule and there is very little time for anything else. He eats every 2 to 3 hours, which means he is constantly on my breast (which makes me feel like a milk machine!). If I could write a book about baby Jake it would be called "Eat, Sleep, Poop." Being the mother of a newborn is the most demanding job I have ever had but the reward is priceless.
As a new mom I have learned to appreciate so many little things in life, such as having the time to take a shower, my mom staying with us and doing all our chores, and even getting to go outside. You'll find this funny but the week after I came home from the hospital, I remember being excited over producing milk and finally going #2 (having a C-Section makes your body irregular for a while!). Yesterday I drove for the first time in over 2 weeks and went to school for a meeting. It felt weird to be out and about again, especially without my belly! I realized that I became quite attached to my pregnancy...I loved it so much, even the last few uncomfortable weeks. I can't wait until I am fully recovered and Jake is big enough so that we can go on walks with the dog and I can enjoy the sunshine once again.
Chris and I entered parenthood in an atypical way. We didn't get to bond with our baby immediately after his birth. We spent the first week of our baby's life away from him. But Jacob's birth has made us stronger as a team. These days, my brain is having to work twice as hard, sleep has become a luxury, and every minute of the day counts (i.e., "Do I go on the computer, eat, use the restroom, do schoolwork, or nap while the baby naps?" or "I better hurry up and finish whatever it is I am doing before he wakes up and demands my breast again for the 35th time today!"). But the most important thing is that the trauma is behind us now...and we are simply adjusting to life as the parents of a happy and healthy 3-week-old baby.

Jacob's Birth
I don't even know where to begin...the past week has been a whirlwind. I went into labor early Friday morning, ended up having an emergency C-section that night, then my baby was taken to another hospital's NICU after having endured a stressful delivery. He had swallowed some amniotic fluid during the delivery and ate some of his meconium (infant's first bowel movement) but it did not go beyond his vocal chords- thank God. The hospital where I was at did not have a NICU, which was why Baby Jake was taken to a bigger hospital. I gave birth on Friday night but did not get to hold and meet my baby until Monday night after I was discharged. On top of that I was in pain and discomfort from the surgery. Needless to say, it was a very emotionally and physically difficult weekend. I found myself not even wanting to update people on Jake's delivery because it was just too hard to relive what happened and to talk about (it still is)...it wasn't exactly the most exciting or happiest birth story and was more traumatic than anything for me, Chris, and the baby.
On Monday night after I was discharged from the hospital, Chris and I went directly to the NICU and I got to meet and hold my baby for the first time. Chris had been able to see him the entire weekend, which was at least comforting. When we left the NICU that night, I had never felt more depressed in my life, as everything finally hit and I was able to process what had happened. I just wanted to go back to Friday morning and start over. I felt so sad seeing my baby in that incubator with blankets and things to comfort him that weren't even from his own home. It wasn't supposed to be this way. These were just a couple of things that were playing over and over in my mind that made me cry...I was going through so much emotionally.
But there is something about prayers and positive thinking...after finally going to sleep on Monday night, I woke up early on Tuesday with the determination to turn things around and find the light in the darkness. For one, our baby is ALIVE and actually quite healthy! He just needs to stay in NICU to fight off an infection that he acquired during labor and is currently on antibiotics (through the IV). He also had jaundice and was only able to feed through the IV for the first several days of his life.
So as of today, Baby Jake is 6 days old. He was born on 1/7/11, four days before his due date, at 9:40 pm, weighing 8.8 lbs (Yes, a big baby! That is why I ended up having a C-section). Chris and I see him twice a day and I can honestly say that each day gets better and better! I have had the chance to feed him and change his diaper and there are many more new mommy moments to come in the next few days! We do not know how long he will be in NICU, and as much as we want him home with us we know that he is getting the best care at the hospital and is getting stronger each day. As for me, I am physically doing quite well but still need lots and lots of rest and recovery. I am doing much better emotionally, though I learned that there are moments when I still have flashbacks of last Friday and feeling like I want to start the whole labor and delivery process over.
We have received so much love and support from our wonderful family and friends this entire time and we could not be more grateful. We know it's just a matter of time until Baby Jake comes home and until then, we have to take it one day at a time and be thankful for each little progress made.
